Correspondence with description of events during the blockade of Charleston, S.C., by Federal troops include 30 July 1864, Port Royal, S.C., to "My dear Patty" [Mrs. J.A.B. Dahlgren], refusing further assistance to Charly, who left for Cuba four years before; discussing the military situation: "Things look well ... if Grant is at a stand, --why Sherman will go ahead and relieve the pressure on Grant"; criticizing newspaper accounts of the army at Stono--"it was a flash in the pan & a back out"; relating his part in the Stono engagement; and instructing her to preserve his diaries and papers. Letter, 18 Apr. 1865, Charleston Harbor, S.C. [photostatic copy], from Geo[rge W.] Brown, enclosing historic documents related to S.C. history, "obtained by me from a deserted public building," and thinking they would be of interest since the papers relate to "a period when South Carolina first dared to raise her hand against the Government." Collection also includes pages from dealer's catalog, Jan. 1963, re Dahlgren papers, 1823-1870, offered for sale, including descriptions of various military operations in and around Charleston, and a photostatic copy of a page from diary, 27 Aug. 1862.
